Please note- I'm not claiming copyright on this method, I came up with it today but I'm pretty sure most sensible people have been doing it like this for years!
Pumpkin Puree Recipe
First things first- we are using this pumpkin to make a Jack O' Lantern from as well- so we can just hack the pumpkin up- this method is specifically for people who want to make a lantern but also don't want to waste all that yummy veg.
- The first trick is the cut- instead of cutting a traditional circular lantern lid cut a semi-circle at the front then go down into a rectangle at the back. The pictures below make it clearer (hopefully):
| I totally stole this idea off Pinterest so I can't take any credit for it but the beauty of this cut is you have much more room to scoop out the flesh and you still keep your overall appearance of a standard lantern.
It comes in a pumpkin carving kit and only costs £2.50 for the whole kit (see left). Now here's the revelation I had today. I used my scooper to scoop out all the fibrous stuff then I got a knife and started trying to cut off the flesh from the inside without ruining the lantern. It's pretty impossible to do this. |
- When you have scooped all there is to scoop you know have to steam your pumpkin. Simply boil up some water- place the pumpkin in a steamer on top and cover. Everywhere says it takes 50 minutes - mine took between 10-15 minutes!
- Once your pumpkin is softly steamed throw it in a food processor and hey presto you've got yourself some delicious homemade pumpkin puree.
Happy Halloween!
