I got given a whole bag load of plums so I thought it might be nice to have a go at making some jam. In the past I've flirted with the idea of making jam but have always been put off by all the fancy equipment you need. That was until my mother in law assured me that all you need to make jam is a pan and a hob. So if you too fancy a go at jam give this recipe a try it's super simple and requires no special jam making stuff.
You will also notice this recipe is low sugar- jam is traditionally loaded with sugar and as we all know too much sugar is not great for anyone let alone our little ones. |

1) It takes away the tartness of the fruit
2) It makes the jam- jammy- in other words it makes it sticky and set
3) It helps preserve it
Thankfully plums have a lot of natural pectin so you can go low sugar with it and it will still set. If we are being really technical this recipe is more like a fruit spread, because it is reduced sugar it will need to be kept in the fridge, will only keep about 4 weeks and is not as sickly sweet as jam but it's good and much healthier.
In place of sugar the jam gets it's sweetness from apples, apple juice and sweetener- I used xylitol, you could use any that you're comfortable with using. If you prefer this recipe would work using real sugar and would still be low sugar compared with normal jam as it only uses 1/2 cup.
